What are DSG Gearboxes?

A Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) is an electrically controlled, dual clutch, manual gearbox…without a normal clutch pedal. Although, there isn’t a clutch pedal the DSG Gearbox allows full automatic, or semi-manual control. It does this by using two separate manual gearboxes working together in side one case, it then uses two independent clutches to gain faster shift times.

The DSG Gearbox is controlled in the same way to the conventional automatic gearbox, using a neutral, drive and reverse position on the gear lever. However, with a DSG Gearbox you have the option to shift gears in a manual mode, with either flappy paddles or using the gear stick in the car. DSG Gearbox’s were designed by BorgWarner and are licensed to the Volkswagen Group.

Where will you find a DSG Gearboxes?

DSG Gearboxes are found in vehicles which are part of the Volkswagen Group, these include;

  • Volkswagen
  • Audi
  • Seat
  • Skoda
  • Bentley
  • Bugatti
  • Lamborghini
  • Porsche

Audi, have re-named the DSG Gearbox for their models to ‘S Tronic’ as Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group the gearbox is practically the same.
BMW vehicles also have their own version, it’s called a DCT, a dual-clutch transmission, the unit functions in the same way to the Volkswagen DSG Gearbox.

Pro’s and Con’s

Advantages Disadvantages
DSG Gearbox’s are said to improve fuel economy by 15%. The DSG Gearbox has a habit of changing gear too soon during full acceleration or hill climbing.
They don’t lose any torque from engine to wheels during gear changes. They tend to run using expensive, specialist transmission lubricants.
During gear changes the alternate gear has already been preselected, meaning an incredibly quick gear change. Due to the complexity of the system, they become expensive to manufacture and therefore increase the new vehicle price.
Very smooth gear changes. DSG Gearbox are typically heavier than a comparable manual transmission.


DSG Gearbox Problems

Cars fitted with DSG Gearboxes have been known to;

  1. Stop suddenly due to loss of power.
  2. Cut off the drive to the wheels, particularly dangerous whilst driving up or down hill.
  3. DSG Gearbox’s can sometimes hesitate/be slow during gear changes.
  4. In some extremely rare cases it has been reported that the gearbox has selected a different gear to the driver’s selection, for example when the drive selected ‘Drive’ the gearbox went into ‘Reverse’.
