3 Funny Breakdown Stories

We all know that breakdowns aren’t fun, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be funny – well, for us onlookers anyway! Here at We Fix Any Car, an MOT and service centre, we see a lot of people feeling fairly miserable because their car’s broken down, and we thought it was about time that people had a bit of a laugh about the unfortunate situations we sometimes find ourselves in. After all, life’s too short not to see the funny side! So, we’ve put together some of our favourite breakdown stories that might make you chuckle…

1) The Fortunate Timing

“My ex-wife and I were on a trip to her parents, and we were arguing about my obvious reluctance to go. I never did get on well with them (a sign of destined relationship-doom?) and I didn’t exactly hide my dread of the trip. She was upset that I didn’t want to go, and I was being stubborn and childish. But, we were in the car, on the way. We weren’t talking much. Then, about an hour into the four hour journey the car began to stutter and struggle. I told my wife to pull into the hard-shoulder up ahead, and the car kind of rolled in before coming to a complete stop. Sure enough it had broken down. We called the breakdown cover and I tried to remain neutral about the whole thing whilst my wife stressed, but to be quite honest I was feeling hopeful that the trip would be postponed. Our breakdown team arrived, and – after a quick appraisal – confirmed that they were going to have to tow the car back to their MOT and service centre and take us home with them. Our journey was over! We were headed home! This was when I made the rookie mistake of letting my joy show a little too much, turning to my wife and saying ‘Well at least I’m happy’ with a big grin. She wasn’t amused and the marriage didn’t last for too long after that.”

2) The Pile-Up

“When I had just passed my driving test, I drove a Fiat Panda – the one that looked kind of like a few cardboard boxes stuck together – that had done more miles than it ever should’ve been able to and was probably in need of an MOT and service. But hey, I was broke and it was car! I had only been driving for a few weeks and was quite nervous about the whole thing, when my friend suggested a road trip. Great idea! But this trip involved driving on a motorway, which I definitely didn’t want to do. In the end, of course, he convinced me, saying it would be fine and I needed to do these things to become a ‘good driver’. So we head out. Got to the motorway. Broke down. Caused a huge pile-up. Cars beeping, people shouting and myself scared witless and never wanting to drive again. My friend was surprisingly quiet whilst we waited for the MOT and service breakdown cover.”

3) The Bad MOT and Service

“Had just collected my car from its MOT and service, having been told that everything was fine. I found this odd as my car was incredibly old and, I had thought, on its last legs. Sometimes mid-drive it would kind of power down and not respond to my foot on the accelerate button for a few seconds before going again. So, yeah, odd. Got just down the road – literally – and it broke down. Just stopped completely. Had to walk back to the MOT and service centre and tell them the car they’d just passed was broken down on the road just outside. Needless to say, never went back to them for an MOT and service!”
